theatre has been a traditional art form in Myanmar for hundreds of years.
It became an integral part of receptions for visiting royalty and important
visitors. Many characters include a king, queen, prince, princess, a regent,
a minister, an old man and old woman, a villian, a sage, an alchemist,
a hermit, a clown, a comedian, a horse, elephant, monkey, tiger, to name
but a few.
Many of the costumes reflect 19th century court dress and are elaborately
ornamented with sequins, imitation gems and other accessories.
Gestures used by puppets were said to be invaluable in acquiring perfect
control and disciplining the body of a live dancer. I saw a performance
where both marionette and dancer were dressed in similar costumes and
synchronized their movements to perfection. It was awesome and brought
tears to my eyes!
The skill of musicians, singers, puppeteers, dancers, costume makers and
set designers play an integral part in making the traditional theatre
a meaningful and memorable event.
We have other marionettes that are not pictured.
